Justice Soumen Sen took oath as the 14th chief justice of the Meghalaya high court in Shillong on Wednesday.

Meghalaya governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar administered the oath at Raj Bhavan.

Justice Hamarsan Sing Thangkhiew had been serving as acting chief justice after Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji retired on 5 September upon reaching the age of superannuation.

Justice Sen was appointed on 26 September by President Droupadi Murmu, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium. He was serving as a judge of the Calcutta High Court prior to the appointment.

Born on 27 July 1965 in Kolkata, Justice Sen graduated in law from the University of Calcutta in 1990, standing first in his class. He enrolled as an advocate in January 1991 and practised at the Calcutta High Cour
