Tropical Storm Jerry was gaining strength as expected and is expected to become a hurricane by the weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center , which revised an earlier forecast that Jerry would become a hurricane Thursday, Oct. 9.

Tropical storm watches have been issued for portions of the northern Leeward Islands ahead of Jerry, which is expected to pass very near the northern Leeward Islands late Thursday, Oct. 9.
