Council chiefs insist "no decisions have been made" over plans to plant a cycle lane in Ayr town centre.
The proposals, which have sparked uproar among businesses and residents, are currently the subject of a public consultation.
Ayrshire Live can reveal the project - the brainchild of the Accessible Ayr taskforce - also took a number of South Ayrshire councillors and officials by surprise.
The scheme is being overseen by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, which is run from neighbouring East Ayrshire Council.
But it's understood many senior South Ayrshire figures claim they were unaware of its progress until a storm of protest hit the headlines last week.
Councillors have been left fielding complaints from angry locals since news of the possible cycle lane emerged.
