LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Less than a week after sending a letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced the Department of Defense has updated its direction on high school sports and other extracurricular activities.

According to the department’s education activity website , athletics and after-school clubs are now considered excepted activities during the government shutdown.

The Department of Defense Education Activity operates 161 schools in 9 Districts in 11 foreign countries, seven states, and two territories. It includes schools at Fort Knox and Fort Campbell.
