A farm owner was injured and five dogs were killed in a fire that destroyed a barn in the Town of Union Vale on Oct. 7.

At 10:20 a.m., the Union Vale Fire District was dispatched to the scene of a fire on 111 Wisseman Road.

A column of black smoke in the sky had already alerted some of the department's firefighters, who were at nearby Vail Farm Elementary School for a Fire Prevention Safety Day at the time.

In an email statement Oct. 8, Union Vale Fire Chief Steven Schmoke said a barn used for storing hay and equipment was on fire at the scene.

In total, 16 agencies besides the Union Vale Fire District responded to the fire.
