PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - One day after meeting with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson responded to federal officials’ demands over ongoing protests outside the ICE building in South Portland.

Mayor Wilson said, federal officials had asked the city to tighten access around the facility, create “free speech zones” for demonstrators, and guarantee protesters would not block federal officers entering or leaving the site.

In his reply, Wilson reaffirmed Portland’s support for free speech and said the city would continue to handle public safety “based on what is in the best interests of Portland and our community.” He confirmed that Portland police have added officers to the area around the building to mange protesters.
