VERMONT (ABC22/FOX44) – Asthma is a serious breathing condition that effects millions of people worldwide. In Vermont, 11% of adults and 7% of children have asthma, with more than half being uncontrolled, according to the Vermont Department of Health.
Vermont Department of Health says nearly 9,600 children in the state have asthma. And when asthma isn't controlled, it becomes very hard to breathe and oxygen levels become more challenged, which contributes to poor performance in activities, concentration and missed school days.
ABC22/FOX44 spoke with the Gertude Chamberlain School nurse, who says elementary schools are more of a training and teaching ground when it comes to students with asthma.
