STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NYPD has a new chief of department.

Chief Michael LiPetri has been tapped to replace Chief John Chell, a Staten Island resident, on an interim basis, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced on Wednesday.

The chief of department is charged with leading the department’s crime-fighting and public safety strategies, operational plans and quality-of-life initiatives, according to the NYPD.

LiPetri, the chief of crime control strategies, has served with the NYPD for 31 years. Although he is being tasked to meet the needs of being the department’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, he will also continue to carry out the duties that come with the job he has held for the last six years.
