BETHESDA, Md. — Sarah Langenkamp and her family moved back to the U.S. to escape the war in Ukraine. The U.S. diplomat was only back for less than one month when she died on the streets of Bethesda.

A truck driver ran her over as he was making a turn. The tragedy in August 2022 inspired her husband, Dan Langenkamp, to advocate for safety changes for bicyclists and pedestrians, not only on the local level but state and federal as well.

Three years after his wife’s death, the Maryland State Highway Administration announced improvements are on the way starting this week. Crews will install new pavement markings within the project limits, apply green paint to help drivers better identify the bike lanes and install flex-post delineators to enhance visibility and separation of the bike lan
