Many drivers in Columbia say they see accidents all the time, especially at the city’s busiest intersections.

Connie Rouse, who drives from Camden to downtown Columbia every day, says speed is a major factor.

“I see accidents all the time and for one, some of it’s us because we’re driving too fast,” Rouse said.

Columbia Police say she’s not wrong. Lance Corporal RJ Paturzo says speed, along with following distance, is the most common factor in traffic collisions.

“Most drivers don’t realize for every 10 miles an hour they’re traveling, they need to be that number of car lengths behind. If someone is at 30 mph, they need to be three car lengths behind the vehicle in front of them to have a safe stopping distance,” Paturzo explained.
