CORVALLIS — Robb Akey’s booming, gravelly voice echoed from the back of the Oregon State’s media room.

“Must be a slow news day if you want to talk to my ass, eh?”

Akey was being self-effacing. He has been through the gauntlet of football coaching over nearly four decades, including some stops in the NFL. He was the defensive coordinator at Central Michigan from 2019-24, and head coach at Idaho from 2007-12.

The first-year special assistant to Oregon State coach Trent Bray will now step into a high-pressure spot as interim special teams coach after Jamie Christian’s firing .
