TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The TRIO Upward Bound program, a free initiative funded primarily by the federal government to help low-income, first-generation high school students prepare for college, has faced a significant setback.

A program coordinator at Pima Community College's Desert Vista campus recently sent News 4 Tucson letters from the U.S. Department of Education. These letters announced the cancellation of funds for the program at the Desert Vista, East and Northwest campuses.

The Department of Education stated that these programs "violate the letter or purpose of Federal civil rights law; conflict with the Department's policy of prioritizing merit, fairness, and excellence in education." Download PDF
