A former UFC fighter has been killed in a suspected gangland execution in a "brazen" public shooting.

Mixed martial arts champion Suman Mokhtarian was allegedly murdered on the evening of October 8 while walking in Sydney's Riverstone neighbourhood.

Emergency services found the fighter-turned-coach suffering gunshot wounds on Annaluke Street shortly after 6pm. He died at the scene.

This was not the first attempt to kill the former fighter, police believe.

An MMA event in Sydney was cancelled in April following concerns from police that Mr Mokhtarian would be the target of an execution attempt.

Mr Mokhtarian was expected to attend the 'Dark Matter Fighting Championship event' as a coach before police intervened.
