A surfer who miraculously survived a shark attack and drove himself to the hospital says he remembers feeling “something chomping” on his calf and feared it “could be the end” for him.
Tour guide Lee Berryman, 57, was surfing at D’Estrees Bay in South Australia on Tuesday afternoon when a suspected large bronze whaler lunged at his board and sunk its teeth into his calf.
“I’d just caught a wave, (I was) paddling back out ... and I felt something chomping on me,” he told 7News.
The shark latched onto his left thigh and he began to fight back.
“I’m on a kneeboard, everything’s close. His head’s right there. I’m shouting, showing my teeth, punching him,” Mr Berryman said.
Eventually, the shark let go and Mr Berryman made it back to shore.
