For people on the autism spectrum, some encounters with police can be difficult, but Naperville police are working to make sure miscommunication doesn't become confrontation in a traffic stop.

A simple blue envelope is now available to the public in Naperville. Its purpose: To help to make interactions with police safer and calmer for people on the autism spectrum.

It is stressful for anyone, I think, to be pulled over,” said Ali Smith Wieringa, a police social worker with the department. “So it is helpful for people with extra stressors or special needs to know they are supported.”

The suburb rolled out the Blue Envelope program a few weeks ago.
