One of the best rivalries in all of college football is set to take place this weekend with the Red River Rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns kicking off in the Cotton Bowl.
It remains to be seen, though, if the best player on either team will be able to play in the game.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer had surgery a couple of weeks ago to fix a broken bone in his throwing hand, and while it was initially believed that he might be sidelined for several weeks, a report earlier this week showed that he was pushing hard to play in this game. However, Mateer was officially listed as "questionable" on Oklahoma's injury report Wednesday night.
According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, there is real uncertainty about whether he will be able to play in the game.
It would be remarkable if Mateer could return for this game, and that news would be huge for Oklahoma and its offense, going up against the elite Texas defense. Before getting hurt, Mateer threw for 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also running for 191 yards and five touchdowns. In his absence, backup QB Michael Hawkins has played well, throwing for 167 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
As we get closer to kickoff on Saturday afternoon, all eyes will be on Mateer and his recovery. With kickoff slated for 3:30 p.m., we will likely get our final answer on whether or not Mateer can play a couple of hours before the start of the game.
