One of the biggest rivalries in the college football world each year takes place in the Cotton Bowl between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns, and one of the biggest storylines heading into that game this year has had to do with the health of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer.

After suffering a broken bone in his throwing hand a couple of weeks ago, Mateer underwent surgery to repair the fracture, which was expected to hold him out for several weeks. The recovery has gone quicker than expected, though, and it was reported earlier in the week that the Heisman contender was working hard to be ready to play this weekend in the Red River Rivalry.

Now, on Thursday, a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel shows that Mateer is "in line to attempt to play" on Saturday, assuming that there are no setbacks with his hand injury.

On Wednesday night, Mateer was officially listed as questionable on Oklahoma's injury report, and there was some real uncertainty about whether or not he would be able to play. While that uncertainty remains, there appears to be some growing confidence that No. 10 will be able to suit up and lead the Sooners into this rivalry game.

Considering how recently the surgery took place, on September 20, it would be remarkable if Mateer could return for this game, and that news would be huge for Oklahoma and its offense, going up against the elite Texas defense.

Before getting hurt, Mateer threw for 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also running for 191 yards and five touchdowns. In his absence, backup QB Michael Hawkins has played well, throwing for 167 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

We will continue to monitor this situation over the next 36 hours, but the most telling time will be during pre-game warmups on Saturday afternoon, when Mateer gives it a go on the field. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. EST on ABC.
