YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A 45-year-old inmate at the York County jail died Wednesday evening after suffering a medical emergency in his cell, authorities said.

Detention center staff found the inmate unresponsive in his cell shortly after 5:40 p.m., according to the York County Sheriff's Office. Officers immediately began life-saving measures, and emergency medical services arrived approximately 10 minutes later.

Despite continued efforts by paramedics, the inmate could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m.

Sheriff Tony Breeden requested the State Law Enforcement Division investigate the death, in accordance with the sheriff's office policy.
