There’s something about home openers that brings out the best in the Maple Leafs.

A breakaway by Matthew Knies, finished off by a goal from Morgan Rielly, brought to life a crowd that had been loudest with chants of “Let’s go Blue Jays.”

It was an electrifying breakaway by Knies, who recovered the puck after Montreal’s Sam Montembeault made the initial save and fed Rielly for the winning goal in Wednesday night’s 5-2 decision over the Canadiens.

Fans inside Scotiabank Arena followed two sports, with the scoreboard flashing Jays-Yankees updates through the evening and showing that playoff game during the second intermission.
