OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Students at Evans Junior High are sharing traditions, history, and perspectives of culture from around the globe though a diversity assembly.

Nearly half of the students at Evans come from different racial or ethnic backgrounds. Hispanic, Black, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and multiracial students make up about 47% of the school’s population.

For student Yzabelo Huerta, the assembly provided an opportunity to showcase her heritage.

“It makes me feel welcome and it makes me feel happy that my culture is able to express themselves and be able to show everyone what we have,” Huerta said.

Huerta not only performed in the assembly but also helped bring other students to join her, celebrating side by side.
