COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Back on August 29, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., Columbus police officers were called to the Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center for reports of a shooting.
According to Detective Bobby Jackson with the Columbus Police Department, officers arrived to find 22-year-old Jacarie Charles dead in the lobby from a gunshot wound. Investigators later determined the entire incident had been captured on the recreation center’s security cameras.
In a previous court testimony, 18-year-old Navaris Johnson was identified as the alleged shooter. Four others — 20-year-old Elijah Smith, 21-year-old Cortez Turner, 18-year-old Christopher Culler, and 20-year-old JaMorris Baker — are also facing murder charges alongside Johnson.
