Prosecutors have revealed their reasons for challenging killer mushroom cook Erin Patterson's life sentence, as a lawyer breaks down the next steps in the murder case.

Victoria's Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) has outlined the grounds of its appeal against Patterson's minimum 33-year jail sentence , a penalty it has labelled "manifestly inadequate".

The grounds of the DPP's appeal, released by the Supreme Court on Thursday, claim Justice Christopher Beale erred in making his finding regarding Patterson's future prison conditions.

The prospect of Patterson being confined to her cell, where she generally spends 22 hours per day, contributed to the judge's reasons to allow her a non-parole period of 33 years.
