The big-screen musical version of the Broadway classic “Kiss of the Spider Woman” offers Jennifer Lopez’s fantasy characters a grounding in real life.

The gay window dresser Molina shares his dingy prison cell with the straight revolutionary activist Valentin and entertains him with dramatic fantasies surrounding his favorite movie star, the diva Ingrid Luna.

Tonatiuh, the son of Mexican immigrants and a longtime queer activist, is Molina and Mexico’s Gabriel Luna (“Andor”) is Valentin. We see them as prisoners and then as characters in the fantastic Hollywood musical numbers.

Tonatiuh signed on once he read writer-director Bill Condon’s (“Dreamgirls”) multi-layered script.
