SHAWANGUNK – The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision had to deal with yet another instance of inmate and corrections officers becoming ill from an unknown substance.

State officials said that at approximately 11:25 p.m. on October 7, at Wallkill Correctional Facility in Shawangunk, staff found an incarcerated individual lying on a bathroom floor unresponsive but breathing. As additional staff arrived, the prisoner became responsive and was transported to the medical unit at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility for observation.

The two responding correction officers became ill and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The dorm was evacuated, and a local HAZMAT team responded. An investigation is underway.
