WASHINGTON — Officers killed a murder suspect they were trying to arrest in a shooting inside a Columbia Heights apartment Thursday morning.

The Capital Area Regional Task Force was trying to arrest the person around 7 a.m. Thursday morning in an apartment building on the 1400 block of Girard Street Northwest. When they got to the apartment, there was a "exchange of gunfire," DC Police Chief Pamela Smith said. She did not say who fired their weapons first.

Smith said the suspect was hit multiple times, and despite emergency medical services work to try and save them, the person died at the scene.

The suspect, who police have not yet named, was accused of murdering 33-year-old Maurisha Singletary.
