The D.C. Streetcar will shut down more than a year earlier than planned, with no clear timeline for the “next generation” electric bus service Mayor Muriel E. Bowser says will eventually replace it.

Service on the single line that runs between Union Station and the edge of the RFK campus was supposed to end in the summer of 2027. Bowser announced in May that the city’s sole streetcar line would be replaced by late 2028 or mid-2029 with an electric bus she called a “next generation streetcar” that would be charged by the same overhead wires. But in a tight budget season, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) eliminated the streetcar’s annual funding starting next October. A DDOT spokesman said that penalties for canceling a contract with the operator will require service to end in March
