NORTH CANTON, Ohio (WJW) -- Police and SWAT teams in North Canton are on the scene of an "active shooter" investigation, which started to unfold around 9 a.m. on Thursday.

According to the North Canton Police Department, officers responded to the area of 175 Applegrove Street. As of 10:30 a.m., police said the situation is "contained but ongoing."

The public was advised to avoid the area until further notice.

"Please limit calls to 911 & police dispatch to true emergencies," said police.

As a result of the situation, students and staff at nearby Walsh University were temporarily told to shelter in place.
