JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri health officials are urging residents to take precautions after a significant spike in West Nile virus activity has led to 16 human cases and three deaths in 2025.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) announced Thursday that the state is experiencing the highest levels of West Nile virus (WNV) activity in recent years. As of Oct. 4, the state has reported 16 human cases, resulting in 15 hospitalizations and three deaths.
The department noted that these figures reflect a marked increase both in Missouri and across the country compared to previous years.
In the Ozarks, there have been two confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in 2025, with both being reported in Greene County.
