You’ve heard of a bull in a china shop. A panicked naked guy crashing through a toy store is basically the same concept. If that premise from Roofman sounds funny, then writer-director Derek Cianfrance has done his job.

The filmmaker behind Blue Valentine , A Place Beyond the Pines , and The Light Between Oceans is known for leaving moviegoers wracked with heartache. He did it again with I Know This Much Is True , his 2020 HBO show starring Mark Ruffalo as desperately troubled twin brothers, and once more with his Oscar-nominated work on the screenplay for Sound of Metal , which starred Riz Ahmed as a drummer losing his hearing. Cianfrance knows he knows how to make you cry.

With Roofman , he wanted to try making you laugh. (And only cry a little, maybe.)
