A Rumney man is being fined almost $1,000 for unlawfully removing political signs from the side of the road before the 2024 election.

James Martin, 64, pled guilty to two counts of removing signs on Groton Hollow Road in Rumney, according to a Thursday news release from the state Attorney General's Office.

Plymouth District Court imposed a $400 fine and a $96 penalty assessment for each count.

The charges resulted from an investigation involving the state Department of Justice's Election Law Unit, which is responsible for enforcing state statutes governing the placement and removal of political signs.

Per these laws, people who unlawfully remove political advertisements can face civil or criminal penalties -- even if the sign that they're removing has been unlawfully placed.
