EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A 16-year-old East Providence High School student is facing charges for allegedly setting a fire inside a bathroom stall, according to police.

The teenager was taken into custody Thursday morning after police investigated a video showing someone igniting toilet paper in a school bathroom that circulated on social media.

The student was charged with arson and vandalism.

"The safety of our students is our highest priority. We will thoroughly investigate, charge, and prosecute any act of criminal behavior," East Providence police said in a social media post. "Our commitment to maintaining a safe school environment is unwavering."

Mayor Bob DaSilva called the incident a "poor decision with real-life consequences."
