Lawyers representing survivors of childhood sexual abuse say the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore ‘s offer to pay just $33 million toward a settlement is a nonstarter.
Last Friday, the nation’s oldest archdiocese filed a “form plan” in its bankruptcy case, saying it was willing to pay about $33.2 million , which included contributions from affiliated Catholic entities. It said it expected insurance companies to pay “hundreds of millions” on top of that. The church’s contribution would mean about $35,000 for each of the 900-plus survivors with claims in the bankruptcy case.
The committee representing survivors, in response, filed a plan calling for the archdiocese to pay almost $889 million on its own, before any contribution by insurance companies. The plan would call for
