LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) - In the early morning hours of June 22, 2025, a Lenexa police officer shot and killed a suspected gunman at an apartment complex. Nearly four months later, prosecutors have determined the officer’s shooting was justified.
Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced his review of the case on Thursday afternoon, stating that the officer’s “use of deadly force which resulted in the death of Jose Enrique Cartagena-Chacon was justified under Kansas Law.”
An autopsy determined that Cartagena-Chacon’s cause of death was due to multiple gunshot wounds by the officer. He also had a blood alcohol level of .248.
