The North Bay Humane Society has suspended taking in any stray dogs until further notice.

The closure is due to the team returning from a Thunder Bay-based animal transport with 20 puppies.

“It is suspected that some dogs in the group may have contracted canine parvovirus,” the shelter explained.

“Out of an abundance of caution for the vulnerable animals in our care. Stray cat intakes are still accepted.”

Executive director Liam Cullin said the humane society regularly facilitates transfers with partner shelters.

“In 2024, we welcomed 117 cats and 177 dogs from other organizations. We also transfer animals from North Bay to partner shelters and Humane Societies in southern Ontario, where larger populations mean they often have a greater chance at adoption,” he said
