A small farming community is in mourning after the death of an 11-year-old boy who was thought to have been driving a ute that crashed in northern New South Wales.

Emergency service crews were called to the scene at Graman, about 50 kilometres north-west of Inverell, just after 11am on Thursday.

Officers from the New England Police District found a ute had rolled off Girraween Road.

An 11-year-old boy, who police believe was the driver, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

A second 11-year-old boy who was a passenger in the vehicle was flown to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious condition.

Inverell Mayor Kate Dight said it was a "tragic" situation.

"It's a devastating event … for the whole Graman community," she said.

" My heart goes out to them. "
