MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- There are a lot of questions and concerns about the National Guard’s role as they are expected to be in Memphis on Friday, but Mayor Paul Young says they will not serve as law enforcement.

The National Guard's deployment is a part of the Memphis Safe Task Force’s mission to reduce crime.

One of the things the National Guard will focus on is blight, which city leaders say goes hand in hand with crime. WREG spoke to a Whitehaven homeowner who says cleanup is needed in his community.

“As you can see, the curve, the streets, the city is supposed to be cutting this and digging it up. But as you can see, the sewage is growing, it's flooding, rain backing up and everything," said Whithaven Owner Terry Sims.
