A New Haven man who uses a wheelchair says management at his apartment complex refused to approve a chair lift that would have made his home accessible — and instead told him to move.

Esteban Gonzales, a resident at Sunset Ridge Apartments, was injured nearly three years ago while working at Bella Vista. Since then, he said it’s been a struggle to get through medical and rehabilitation appointments — and an even bigger challenge to navigate the stairs at his apartment complex.

“I applied so many places, with elevators, first floor,” Gonzales said. “The only way I can get out is dragging myself up and down, dragging my chair.”
