CANTON, New York (WWNY) - Coming off a wet summer in 2024, Ted Greenwood of Greenwood Dairy in the town of Canton was hoping for less rain this year.

“Last year, too much water. This year, not enough,” he said.

A lack of rain drove crop yields down this year. An example: corn.

“24 to 25 tons per acre was the average. This year, the average was 19 tons per acre,” said Greenwood.

Greenwood and his farm, along with the rest of St. Lawrence County, just went through the driest summer based on data going back 100 years, with only 2 inches of rainfall, according to St. Lawrence University geology professor Alexander Stewart.

“And we also had the least number of rainy days over the summer,” he said.
