While residents in Kotzebue have made it through the first wave of coastal flooding, more high water is expected in the coming days.

Your Alaska Link spoke with the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness to better understand what’s ahead.

Rick Thoman said, “This one is the remnants of a typhoon, and this looks to be a very deep storm, potentially a higher risk for significant flooding.”

Kotzebue, located approximately 547 miles northwest of Anchorage, is now beginning to see water slowly recede.

Elizabeth Ito, a local resident, noted, “It's gone down quite a bit.”

Although Ito wasn’t caught directly in the storm, she witnessed its aftermath.
