WATERLOO, Iowa — Political tensions are rising in the mayoral race as a vandalism incident involving campaign signs draws attention.

For the second time, damage to a "Hart for Mayor" sign was reported to police on Wednesday. Similar damage occurred last week, with signs for incumbent Mayor Quinten Hart being spray-painted in a local neighborhood.

The motive and identity of the person responsible remain unclear. Robert Tyson, vice president of the NAACP in Waterloo, emphasized the importance of treating everyone with dignity, regardless of background or party affiliation.

"Sometimes we do dumb things without a doubt. I shouldn't say dumb things but things that I wish I should've thought about before I did it. Sometimes it becomes too late," Tyson said.
