WASHINGTON — A very public shouting match between two high-profile New York congressmen — one a Democrat, the other a Republican — in a House hallway highlights both the growing tensions over the government shutdown and perhaps some political gamesmanship as the shutdown drags on.

On Capitol Hill, there was an unusually public war of words between two New York congressmen. Rep. Mike Lawler, R-Peekskill, confronted Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-Brooklyn, the House Minority Leader, after Jeffries emerged from a news conference Wednesday. Lawler blamed Jeffries for the government shutdown. Meanwhile, Jeffries accused Lawler of making a scene to appear relevant.

“You’re embarrassing yourself. The largest cut to Medicaid in American history — you voted for that,” Jeffries told Lawler.
