STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. — Leo Cruz-Silva, a man from Mexico in the United States illegally, died Saturday of an apparent suicide while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at the Ste. Genevieve County Jail, ICE said in a news release.

ICE said a jail staff member found Cruz-Silva, 34, with a sheet tied around his neck "in what looked like a suicide attempt." ICE said jail staffers and paramedics were unable to revive him.

ICE said Festus police arrested Cruz-Silva for public intoxication on Sept. 30 and notified ICE. After Festus released him, ICE arrested him. He had been arrested previously in 2010 for disorderly conduct and in 2017 for a probation violation, both in Tennessee.
