Holtec International, a private nuclear energy company, has officially given up on developing what was billed as a temporary waste repository for commercial spent fuel in southeastern New Mexico — despite a win at the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year and a federal administration friendly to nuclear power.
Holtec spokesperson Patrick O’Brien wrote in an email to The New Mexican the company and its partner, the Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance, mutually agreed to cancel the agreement due to an “untenable path forward” in the Land of Enchantment.
