More jobs are expected to be cut from the artificial intelligence and data research group at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), in what the public sector union has labelled as "short-sighted and reckless".

CSIRO told the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) in September it intended to cut jobs from data research arm Data61, saying it had become evident the "current administrative capacity" exceeded the group's needs.

A CSIRO spokesperson said it was "reshaping" its research portfolio and would undertake "workforce planning" to ensure it had the right scale.

The organisation first warned of job cuts in early 2024, before confirming up to 500 jobs would be slashed in a bid to save at least $100 million.
