PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - A new sort of day center has opened in Portland’s Old Town. It’s designed to support the homeless community, while also benefiting the neighborhood.

City officials gathered on Thursday for an exclusive walkthrough of the Northwest Glisan Oasis - a managed outdoor day center located at Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest Glisan.

“We want this right in the heart, because if we’re going to turn our city around, we can’t go to the fringes of the city,” Mayor Keith Wilson said at the event. “We got to where the care is most needed and that’s right here.”

Open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the site welcomes up to 200 people - housed or unhoused - and offers a place to rest, meet with outreach workers, access basic hygiene services and build community.
