BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The documentary The Alabama Solution , which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival , uses video captured inside Alabama’s prisons to show violence, forced labor, overcrowding, and crumbling facilities. The images, at times, are unbelievable.

Directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman and co-produced by journalist Beth Shelburne, the film follows several incarcerated men who used phones that were brought in against prison rules to show the macabre conditions.

Shelburne began investigating Alabama’s prison system while working as an anchor and investigative reporter at WBRC 6 News .

Origins of the project

The filmmakers first gained access to Alabama prisons in 2019 during a church outreach event at Easterling Correc
