As the Trump administration deploys National Guard troops in some of the country’s most populous cities, Gov. Josh Shapiro has doubled down on warnings to the president that he has ultimate power in Pennsylvania and will not permit such deployments under his watch.
Shapiro on Wednesday night joined two dozen other Democratic governors in a lawsuit that underscores civilian authority over the military and the sovereignty and police powers of states.
“I filed that amicus brief last night to make very, very clear that the Pennsylvania National Guard, under the leadership of General (John) Pippy, is under my command,” Shapiro said in a written statement.
