Venezuela's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The announcement comes after US President Donald Trump had campaigned to win the award.

Speaking in New York at the UN General Assembly last month, he said "everyone says that I should get the Nobel Peace Prize".

The announcement on Wednesday night that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of Mr Trump's peace plan increased speculation over a potential win for the US president.

However, Nina Graeger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, told Sky News the development had likely came too late for this year's award.
