A nearly century-old church and its attached rectory in Kitchener are being recommended for heritage designation.
Construction began in 1937 on the red-brick St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, which stands at 85 Strange St., north of Victoria Street and just outside the city’s downtown boundary.
The rectory, now connected to the church, was built in 1948.
The property was recommended for designation under the Ontario Heritage Act at a Heritage Kitchener meeting on Tuesday.
It’s currently listed as a non-designated property of cultural heritage value or interest on the city’s municipal heritage register.
Designation helps to ensure appropriate conservation and manage changes to a property, while further recognizing its value to the community.
