ON THIS DAY IN 1905 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle said, “Mr. Roosevelt called the football instructors of the universities of Princeton, Yale and Harvard into conference in the White House on Monday. He sought to impress on them the necessity that the game should not be hereafter distinguished for fractured arms, broken legs, dislocated shoulders, blackened eyes and disjointed vertebrae. This illustrates the versatility of the President, which conferences with John Mitchell, Pierpont Morgan, Mr. Baer, Mr. Truesdale and other coal railroad presidents have before this illustrated.”

ON THIS DAY IN 1909 , the Eagle reported, “The new legal holiday, Columbus Day, is to be fittingly celebrated by the Knights of Columbus of Jersey City on Monday evening, October 11, with a charity ball of gr
